A high level of English is required to achieve top exam results and gain a place at university in the UK. Beyond this, a good grasp of the English language enables students to understand more, write more eloquently and achieve good grades in their exams. It also allows them to take part in and enjoy more social activities, make friends more easily and better understand and immerse themselves in British culture.
For international students attending Chelsea Independent College alongside British students, we aim to develop their language ability to near-native levels to ensure that they can flourish in an academic and social context.
Students must be able to demonstrate a level of English appropriate to the chosen academic programme in order to commence studies. Before embarking on their chosen academic course, students need to take an English language assessment, unless they already possess a recognised English language qualification at the appropriate level. If students require further support and development we can guide them to a suitable full-time English programme with us, lasting for one, two or three terms before beginning their academic course.
Complement and Support Academic Study
At Chelsea Independent College we believe it is important that English is studied alongside other academic subjects and not in isolation. Learning a language to the standard required by the most prestigious universities takes time and cannot be rushed. If required, students can benefit from a minimum of four hours of English tuition every week throughout their studies. These lessons also cover revision and exam techniques to help them succeed in the IELTS examination.
These programmes provide students with the opportunity to boost their academic English ahead of their full-time academic studies. The programmes support students with their communication and academic language, help them work on their study skills and provide an opportunity to adapt to studying in the UK thereby giving themselves a head start in their new academic careers.
Highly Qualified Teachers
Our courses are taught by professional and fully qualified teachers who have extensive experience of teaching English to international students and of preparing them for their IELTS examinations.
A Complete Language Programme
The programme improves students’ academic English across the whole spectrum of reading, writing, speaking and listening, as well as developing language systems (vocabulary, grammar and pronunciation). Daily homework and regular tests assess their progress and identify areas for further development.
An Immersive Approach
We encourage our students to read widely, listen to English-speaking media and, of course, practise as much as possible by speaking English at every opportunity both inside and outside the classroom. This leading A-Level college in London also offers trips, activities and social events that students can take part in as well as visits from guest speakers.
